18F-Fluorodihydroxyphenylalanine (18F-FDOPA) PET-CT is used to study Parkinson’s Disease. However, it is also useful in evaluating brain tumours such as glioblastomas, especially in suspected recurrences after surgery and radiotherapy. To diagnose Parkinson’s disease and related disorders, patients may need to stop some interfering drugs before the scan. Your consultant can help in understanding the same.
Test information: Fasting: 4 hours
Reporting: Within 2 hours*
- Fasting for 4 hours is needed.
- Please carry all medical documents, including doctor referrals, previous reports of any CT, MRI etc.
- Always try to reach 15 min before appointment time as the radiopharmaceutical (tracer) used for 18F-DOPA PET-CT has a short half-life, and any delay may cause tracer decay, and you may be rescheduled for another day.
- Please carry identification proof such as an Aadhar card, pan card etc.
- On many occasions, the 18F-DOPA Brain PET-CT is accompanied by 18F-FDG PET-CT for differential diagnosis. You may be asked to come on another day for the same with same preparations.
- After registration and payment, the patient's medical history is taken, including checking referral, treatment, investigation records, history of last meal and any allergy to contrast media, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, etc., depending on the clinical requirement.
- An intravenous cannula is fixed for tracer and contrast media administration.
- The patient is injected with radioactive material (18F-DOPA) and advised to relax for a duration to allow the tracer to be distributed with an adequate target to background ratio.
- The patient is taken for the scan, which may take around 15 minutes. Recorded images are verified, and the patient is advised accordingly in need of a repeat or delayed images.
- Once these sequences are over, the patient is free to have a meal and go home. The entire procedure takes approximately 2–3 hours. In the case of delayed images, this time may increase.
